WHAT WE DO

Drawing on the strength of our network of 20 colleges and universities with tourism and hospitality programs, the LinkBC staff team manages projects in four key activity areas. LinkBC initiatives are supported by the work of industry and education committees of our advisory board.

1. Promoting BC as a Tourism/Hospitality Learning Destination

Education destination marketing: Education partners collectively increase the number of learners choosing to “Study Tourism & Hospitality in BC, Canada.” A long-term strategy aligned with the province’s goal of doubling tourism revenues by 2015, activities include online and social media presence (

), trade shows, collaborative marketing with regional and city DMOs.

2. Connecting Industry to Students & Graduates

Human resources support: A multi-year strategy promoting graduate skills, and offering career path guidance and support for students as they transition to industry. Key components include:

Student-Industry Rendezvous

The Lower Mainland version of this event annually attracts over 400 students and 100 managers and supervisors for information sharing at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. In March of 2008, the first-ever Vancouver Island Rendezvous brought together over 100 students and managers at Royal Roads University’s Mews Conference Centre.

3. Strengthening the Tourism Learning System

Credibility and excellence in education: BC education partners offer a set of laddered programs that align with our fast changing industry – a coordinated unique in North America, facilitated through LinkBC and a set of handbooks:

LinkBC staff and partners are also responsible for a series of classroom aides called Tourism Today. These handouts provide instructors and students with a catalyst for discussion by sourcing current topics and industry issues from a variety of industry organizations. Tourism Today is available in the Tourism Online Resource Centre under “Curriculum and Instructor Resources”. Click here for a shortcut.

4. Serving as an Industry & Education Information Hub:
the Tourism Online Resource Centre

Supporting a “smart” industry: In addition to ongoing communications with education and industry stakeholders, LinkBC hosts the Tourism Online Resource Centre (TORC), a high-impact tool offering an unprecedented collection of resources free of charge, 24 hours a day, through the internet. Visit www.bctorc.ca to access a range of research findings, helpful links to websites, and industry information from across BC, Canada, and around the world.
