TTRA Awards - Deadline May 31, 2010

Terms of Reference: The Canadian Chapter of the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) is dedicated to individuals interested in advancing the quality and effectiveness of tourism research and marketing. TTRA Canada fosters the value and use of research in the marketing, planning and development of tourism. They are a not for profit organization and a chapter of TTRA, an international association.
How to Apply: This year, TTRA Canada is offering 3 student awards for tourism research, one for undergraduates, one for graduates, and one for post graduates.

COTA/Pat Corbett Bursary ($3000) - 2010 Bursary is now closed
Terms of Reference: The Pat Corbett Bursary is an award of $3,000 made to a student studying in British Columbia. Qualifying students will have completed (or currently be finishing) one or two full-time year(s) of instruction in a tourism/travel/hospitality program in a public university, college or institute or through a private institution accredited through the Private Post Secondary Education Commission.

If you need an application mailed to you please contact the Council of Tourism Associations of BC at 604.685.5956 or contact them at info@cotabc.com. Mail completed forms to the COTA office (faxed applications are not accepted). Their address is Suite 1208 - 409 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6C 1T2.
The application form must be accompanied by the following:
- A transcript of your most recent student academic record.
- One or more letters of recommendation from a teacher and/or school administrator currently responsible for your education.
- One or more letters of recommendation from past or present employers.
- Employer and school letters must be on official stationary and must include telephone numbers and fax numbers. COTA reserves the right to check all references.
- ONE (1) page handwritten essay expressing your views on a current tourism issue.
Missing or incomplete documents will detract from your application.
Judging Criteria: Applicants are judged by a COTA appointed jury on their aptitude for the tourism industry, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, financial need, academic record, and letters of recommendation.
Payment of Bursary Money: Payment is made directly to the educational institution for credit toward the student's tuition fee. COTA must receive confirmation of full-time re-enrollment from the college/university before payment can be made.
Deadline: The deadline for 2010 applications has closed. The next round of applications for 2011 bursaries will begin in December 2010.
Export Development Canada (EDC) International Business Scholarships
Terms of Reference: The deadline for applications for the 2010 International Business Scholarships has passed. All 2010 scholarship winners were directly notified in March. The next round of applications for 2011 scholarships will begin in October 2010.
Terms of Reference: The Stephen Phillips Passion for Hospitality Bursary is dedicated to the memory of Stephen H. Phillips, former Vice- Chairman and CEO of AFM Hospitality Corporation Inc., who passed away from cancer in early 2007. This bursary will be awarded to the hospitality student who best represents the qualities that Stephen Phillips brought to the industry. The recipient will: demonstrate a strong commitment to the industry and their chosen field; have shown a “hands on” quality, and an entrepreneurial spirit; be active in industry associations/events, charity work; and displays the ability to lead and inspire a passion for the field in others.
Applicants must:
• Be a Canadian Citizen or landed immigrant
• Be enrolled as a full-time student in a Canadian post-secondary educational institution hospitality related diploma/degree program
• Be registered in their 2nd semester or higher
• Be active in extracurricular program related activities
• Have achieved a minimum of 70% average in the previous semester/year (transcript required)

TORC Work/Study Bursary Program
The TORC Bursary Program for 2010 is now closed. Watch for this award to return in 2011.
Terms of Reference: The Tourism Online Resource Centre (TORC) Work/Study Bursary Program is offered by LinkBC in partnership with industry, and provides a resume-building experience as well as an opportunity to contribute to TORC development.
Qualifying students must be currently enrolled in one to four full-time year(s) of instruction in a tourism or hospitality program at a LinkBC partner institution. The program awards $1000 to a maximum of 4 students. These students conduct secondary research into web resources available in specific topic areas and upload these to the site on a weekly basis.
Students who have participated in past TORC bursary programs are ineligible to apply again.
Judging Criteria: Applicants are judged by a panel comprised of the TORC manager (LinkBC provincial communications officer), the TORC administrator (SFU graduate student) and industry sponsors. In addition to having solid references from instructors and past employers, eligible students must participate in a short training session and contribute sample resources prior to acceptance to the program.
Payment of Bursary Money: Payment of the bursary funds takes place after the completion of the program.

The National Tourism Foundation heads up many efforts designed for students in post-secondary education, with many scholarships awarded annually to students from the United States and Canada pursuing careers in travel and tourism.
